What To Expect at your First Therapy Session?

Meeting with a therapist for the first time can present some uncertainty. The important thing to remember is that the counselor is there to listen to you. That is the purpose of their work.

Some Groundwork

At Blackbird Counseling, your first step will be to set up an introductory appointment.

You’ll be asked to fill out some intake forms, which are available in the “documents” section of our website, here: <link>

Come As You Are

Sometimes people have trouble accessing their deeper feelings, or they have uncertainty about why they’re having some of the problems that they have.

That’s okay. If you’re having that uncertainty, that’s a good place to start.
You can say, “I’m having a tough time, but I’m not sure why.”

Sometimes you might have a clearer sense of the issue you’re having.

In that case, it might be helpful to take a few minutes to formulate the issue you’re having, and what outcome you’d like to get from therapy.

A Safe Space

Your therapist will listen to your concerns with respect and empathy. You can decide what you’re comfortable with, your pace, and what you want to talk about.

She might ask some questions to help the two of you understand the problem more fully. Or she might offer some insight into the issue, or suggest some skills to try.

At the end of your first session, you should have a sense that you’ve been heard and understood. And you might have an idea for some next steps in the process with your therapist.
